The establishment of Bowen Meals on Wheels was proposed at a public meeting in November 1973. A Committee was formed in August 1974 and the first meals were delivered on December 2, 1974, under the auspices of the Blue Nurses Association. At first they operated out of the CWA kitchen. On that day 20 meals were delivered at 50c per meal.
After 5 years of fundraising and support from Lions, Rotary, local churches, the Pensioners’ League and many other organisations and individuals, a dedicated Meals on Wheels building was completed on land donated by the Council. The first meals from here went out on July 16, 1979. By 1981 meal prices had risen to $1.00 The organisation became an incorporated body on September 25, 1986.
Today Bowen Meals on Wheels Inc. continues to deliver an average of 100 nutritious meals a week to people who may be in their senior years, recovering after hospitalisation, a major illness or surgery, a person with a disability, a carer, or needing assistance due to a special circumstance. Even Cyclone Debbie didn’t stop deliveries.
